The sun had just set back on Earth, leaving nothing but there was still an orangish-red glow above the dark silhouettes of trees at the tail-end of the sunset.

The joint Protectorate-government base within Laurence Academy of the Gifted was brightly lit by bulbous mana lights on poles that had just recently been erected, especially in the heart of the encampment where the portal was.

The rift was no longer expanding and had instead collapsed in on itself, but the scientists and government employees had long since prepared for that and installed a large, triangular device within the rift that prevented it from fully closing.

Several dedicated teams monitored the high tech device at all times, ensuring that it was operating as intended. They had guages to constantly monitor the quantum 4R field and energy draw from the gate. The natural field was far too weak to passively power the gate, so bottled canisters labelled [Q4R] of highly concentrated energy were connected to it.

Chapter 40 – Pitiful Fate

Senna floated down into the depths of the water, the acid clinging onto her face and hair like a leech. Thanks to the strength of her body however, especially with mana further reinforcing it, it couldn’t break her skin. It did cause some light rashes due to her mana being muddled, but it couldn’t harm her skin beyond that.

It was not to be underestimated however, the strength behind this acid was enough to eat away and damage the arachne thread clothing she wore, eating away at the collar area which also receive some of the acid spray. That this clothing was extremely difficult to break or destroy went to show how truly terrifying the acid actually was.

As her senses came back to her, she uprighted herself in the water and found her footing at the base of the small lake.

Stopping to think for a moment, she wiped the remaining acid off her face and shook it free into the water. She then carved off a slice of a stone on the lake bed with her nails before fashioning it into three long chopstick-like needles before walking back to the edge of the lake.

Chapter 39 – Laurie

The shadow creature, which Thomas kept insisting on calling a shadowloper, attacked several times as they got closer to their goal, but they managed to break free from the assault each time.

The trio eventually reached a dark cavernous opening in a cliff face that had been partially obscured by large boulders to prevent it from being seen from a distance, but it was simply too big to be hidden.

Thomas looked down at the pair of compasses and paced left and right, watching the needle points move in unison.

“Not only is the source of the rift inside this cave, but so is our missing student~”

“He may no longer be alive. His was missing for over a month now, and his location hasn’t moved at all on our way here, unlike the source.” Captain Reeves shook his head with a sorrowful expression. “We should prepare for the fact he is no longer alive.”

Chapter 38 – Shadowloper

“Idiot, stay behind me,” Senna hissed while standing in front of Thomas protectively, her gaze constantly scanning through the thick forest.

It may have been daytime, but shadows danced through the leaves and under overhanging trunks as if they were alive.

They had run across several groups of heroes and other forces in the forest here for rare resources or as contracted hire, but currently everything was deathly silent as they felt isolated from the rest of the realm.

“It’s almost like a shadow demon, but much more…”

“More powerful and lethal.” Anthony Reeves finished off Thomas’ words for him, his sword drawn and postured into a defensive position. “I don’t know what it is doing here though. This area had previously been explored, and there was no such reports of such a creature.”

Chapter 37 – The Esoteric Inverse World

“Wow, you all have worked fast, haven’t you~”

Thomas whistles in amazement at the amount of progress that had happened around the rift in Laurence Academy of the Gifted.

What was originally just one of several open fields in the school for physical classes or festivals, had very quickly been occupied by the Protectorate and defense forces shortly after the rift had appeared. Giant iron walls were used to seal around the portal and automated guns constantly faced inwards.

In the past few days however, roads in from the back of the school grounds had be laid, and several portable buildings had been erected while more permanent fixtures were already under construction. Construction vehicles where constantly operating while mages and heroes provided assistance with spellcraft and superpowers.

Chapter 36 – Bullying The New Night Noblesse Guild Leader

“Hahahaha!! This new guild leader is weak, WEAK!” Thomas shouted ecstatically while attacking the new guild leader of Gϋnther’s Age of Heroes guild, Night Noblesse.

He was relentless, destroying their ranking in several pvp arenas and stealing all of their points without mercy. His guild, Undying, only had seven members in it, half of which were inactive most of the time. This meant he performed terribly in the guild arena, and hence struggled to get new, high quality players to join.

“What, I’m out of energy to attack?”

Thomas complained and tried to pay to recharge his energy gauge, but froze as his bank declined due to insufficient credits.

Chapter 35 – The Teacher That Didn’t Just Do Math

*Bang* *Bang* *Bang*

Thomas thumped his fist on the door to Hubert Plaid’s home, the wooden door doing little to dull the reverberating echo inherent to such a metal container.

The door opened shortly afterwards as an annoyed and intoxicated elderly man in his sixties revealed himself.

“Huh, watcha want? I’ve already paid up this month so why are you fucking…”

Hubert trailed off as his eyes focused on Senna, a blatant lascivious desire within his gaze along with a trace of madness.

“We want to have a chat about some events 30 years ago.”

“…I’ve already done my time. Fuck off.”

Chapter 34 – Even Villains Need To Work

“The ex-convict lives here, huh?”

Thomas remarked as Senna and himself entered a run down residential community. This place had been a large caravan park at some point in the past before being transitioned into a the residential community it was now as housing demands increased.

Proper infrastructure hadn’t even been built, instead dumping cheap old shipping containers and retrofitting them into living spaces, the tenants further modifying them without regulation and resulting in their current appearance.

The shipping containers where stacked three stories high from what Thomas could see, some places even four high. Multiple containers were sometimes combined into larger living spaces. Run down caravans were also used, either as standalone living spaces or modified as extensions in existing ones.

Power lines cobwebbed between the various containers in a tangled mess, but everyone seemed to have no issues with electricity. The road surface was broken and destroyed, which didn’t do much for drones, but it prevented standard patrol bots or vehicles from being able to easily enter.

Chapter 33 – Still Waiting At Death’s Door

“I knew it! Why the hell is it you two again?!”

The cab driver glared out of the window after parking as he watched Thomas and Senna approach. He remembered the two very well, the fae girl who constantly glared at him in disgust, and the man who lacked all manners and was flicking snot in the back of his car.

This wasn’t a company vehicle. He worked for a ride share company that required one to provide their own vehicle as the profit share was much better. This meant he had to clean up his car, and having to clean other people’s boogers was particularly disgusting.

If he hadn’t already accepted this commission and afraid of getting poor reviews and having the company cutting him off from their service, he would have immediately driven away.

“Ehh, what? Have we met before?” Thomas asked in genuine confusion as he simply entered the rear door of the car without care, the driver’s face not triggering any memories.

Chapter 32 – Laurence Academy of the Dirty Secrets

“I said, I’m not hungry,” Senna stated with a vein protruding from her temple in annoyance.

Thomas rose his brow and responded with an overly exaggerated, “Is that so?”

Lined up in front of Senna was a plethora of empty plates that once housed strawberry shortcakes, trifles, and tarts. Even as she spoke, she was halfway through devouring a French vanilla slice while another plate of macaroons sat on her lap.

She had been like this ever since they got home, consuming a plethora of desserts while her temper was particularly volatile. Her eyes glowed like charcoals in the night the entire time, a typical physiological manifestation of her hunger.

Thomas leaned over from behind Senna and brought his arm to her mouth, pressing it against her lips before directly stating, “Eat.”
